Ruby and her second husband, John Homer Lowe

  1. Jon Homer Lowe was the luckiest man ever being married to the wonderful Ruby Keeler for 28 years, until his death. He was the one true love of her life, til death did em apart. It was a much happier marriage than to Jolson. Not that Ruby would’ve ever given a regular Joe like me the time of day though even if I could’ve traveled back in time, lol. Ruby was the other half of one of the most famous celebrities of the time. Then again, how big of a name was Jon Homer Lowe then? Had anyone ever even heard of him before he married Ruby?

  2. I read somewhere that Buddy Epsom was quite enamoured with Ruby, and wrote some love poems to her. Being Al Jolson’s other half though, Buddy was unable to get romantically involved with Ruby. One thing about Ruby though is that she was not a snob, she was the sweetest, kindest soul, and was very down to earth, the perfect girl next door. She was beautiful, but not so much in a sexy way, she was adorable in a sweet way. She was the perfect woman for a romantic long term relationship, but not a fling. She was deep. Also, she admitted that the speakeasies were not her kind of place, she only frequented them due to her loving to dance.

  3. Ruby and her frequent co-star, Dick Powell, may have been involved for a time off-screen following her separation from Al Jolson. It was noted in the press at the time that she rented a house that was close to Powell’s bachelor pad (his marriage to Joan Blondell was in trouble by then and they were often seen out with other people rather than with each other). If it did happen, I don’t blame her as she had been so stifled and mistreated by Jolson. She was a private person, so I don’t think this was something she would have discussed, but whenever she spoke about Dick Powell in interviews (which wasn’t very often) she was always very complimentary toward him. Either way, I’ve always liked her, and I’m glad she had such a loving second marriage.

  4. Ruby was before my time. Now I realize what the big hullabaloo was about her. Just saw Ruby with James Cagney. Her charismatic sweetness explodes from the screen. What a wonderful life story hers would be although no one could replace that dainty lovable beauty today. She must’ve been a very pure soul and purity has been gone from our stars for many years.
